Dominican Republic Mission Trip - February 2025: Update #4

Jennifer New

Updated: Feb 26

Emotions were high going into our fourth and final day. In the morning, we visited another baseball field where FCA has partnered with the coaches. After playing kickball and baseball with the boys there, Michael shared with the boys about having a relationship with Jesus through prayer. On the bus, Melinda shared a devotion about spiritual gifts and relying on the Lord as we step out of our comfort zone in ministry.

On the last day with the girls, the worship music was especially energetic and emotional for us all. Amy, Macie, Matt, Grace, and Sophie did an amazing job leading everyone as we sang in Spanish. For the message, Phil shared with the girls about how prayer is how we know Jesus better and draw closer to Him. No matter where we are or what we are doing, prayer is a constant connection and conversation with God. As I sat next to one of my sweet girls, Karina, I saw her write down two important scripture references to study later: Romans 10:9 and Ephesians 2:8-9.

The relationship building continued through fun games that Mandi prepared for us. The girls absolutely love games and they are HIGHLY competitive. We also kept them busy creating a craft including the word “ORA” which will remind them to “PRAY.” The girls were so appreciative of everything we did for them and gave them. I hope each of the items we created together this week reminds them how much they are loved by Jesus and by us.

During the second session, Michael and Matt did a great job of answering questions the girls had submitted. The questions were insightful and showed us the girls are engaged and seeking a relationship with the Lord. Using sidewalk chalk, Glenda and Ryan shared the Roman Road with their group of younger girls. In small groups with the girls and mothers, we shared prayer requests. In our group of the oldest girls, we prayed for the girls to actively seek the Lord, we prayed for their families, and for health. With the deepest pain I’ve seen in someone’s eyes, one of our girls, Jusmaily, asked us to pray for her family and her country of Haiti, which is in a truly desperate situation.

After enjoying delicious cakes (orange, carrot, and chocolate) one of the mothers, Teresa, baked, we said our tearful goodbyes to the girls and mothers. We all wanted more time with them. As they loaded on the bus and drove away, I’ll never forget their sweet faces pressed against the window and waves goodbye. Now, we pray the seeds that were planted this week continue to grow these precious girls’ relationship with Jesus and for this amazing community of Boca Chica. —Amy Winemeister
